The Importance of Insects
If you enjoy fruits and vegetables, insects are your friends, because, without them, we’d be awfully hungry and surrounded by dead carcasses. Insects pollinate plants that offer us nutrition, flowers that offer us healing, and they are also expert decomposers.
Have you ever seen members of an ant colony consume a dead bug? I came upon this strategic operation one day while staying at a friend’s house, and watched intently. They dissected the insect and over a two-day period, the carcass, along with the ants, disappeared. Without ants and other insects to clean up wastes of both animals and plants who are dead or decaying, we would have a very messy planet.
One element of the circle of life is dependant on another. Small birds, frogs, reptiles, and amphibians survive almost solely on insects. If you care about keeping species alive, care about insects.
I care. And I also prefer that they live outside. And my latest movie tells the story of my continuing work toward living in harmony with the insect kingdom. Under hostile circumstances, it’s a challenge.
